Leverage

Nancy S. Thompson

Book two of The Mistaken Series. Four years ago, Tyler Karras' quest to avenge his wife's death led to all out war with San Francisco's Russian Mafia. With the Bratva's collapse and its king, Dmitri Chernov, long dead, all Ty wants now is to put it behind him and enjoy a second chance at life with his new bride, Hannah, and the child they're expecting any day. But Chernov's heir, Grigory Dmitriev, has returned, bitter and determined. He wants his kingdom back, and he's more than willing to leverage Ty's new family to get it. First he targets Conner, Ty's brooding nineteen-year-old stepson, manipulating the boy into a vortex of violence, drugs, alcohol, and gambling. Then he turns his sights on Hannah. At eight months pregnant, she's the ultimate bargaining chip. With all their lives in jeopardy, Ty has little choice but to do as Grigory commands.  But Tyler swore he'd never kill again. He buried that monster four years ago and means to keep it that way.  With his new family on the line, Ty will cross further into the dark side than ever before, challenging everything he believes about himself, and forcing him to face the ghosts of his past. Only then will Ty discover if he has the strength to sacrifice his last chance at redemption and save the lives of those he loves.

Also from Nancy and Glenn

Tyler Karras is an honest man, a transplanted Brit living the American dream, but his charmed life takes an unexpected turn when his brother, Nick, is coerced into joining ranks with San Francisco's Russian mafia. Ty intervenes to secure Nick's freedom, yet only succeeds in incurring their wrath. With no choice but to accept Nick's new life, Ty returns to his own, but his dreams are dashed when his wife—pregnant with their first child—is killed, the victim of a reckless crime. Despondent and bitter, Ty macerates his grief in alcohol. From the depths of the bottle screams a voice, howling for vengeance. His target is a stranger, the woman who drew his wife toward her death. He doesn't know her, but he'll find her, and when he does, he will make her pay, for a deal has been struck with Nick's Russian associates, enslaving her into a life of bondage.

The Mistaken has won the award of 'Best Audiobook' at the eFestival of Words awards ceremony. The Mistaken also won 'Best Thriller' award for Nancy S Thompson's book about betrayal, revenge, difficult love, mobsters and escaping the grasp of something so terrifying you'll have to read it to find out.

Follow the awards video to see who won and check out Nancy's blog to see where you can find this excellent book in as many formats as you require for your electronic devices (nook, ebooks), listening devices (audiobook) and of course good old standard books (paperback and I believe hardback).

Here's Nancy's blog to find all those wonderful locations to get your hands on this book. Nancy S Thompson's Blog - The Mistaken

Some Reviews from Amazon below:

Thompson has written a story that will grab you on multiple levels...a story of undying love in the midst of tragedy...of blood vs. water...a story of one man's struggle with ethical and moral fortitude...not just a book to read but to linger on. Thompson will have you guessing who the good guys are up till the last page. A great book for both the romance and the mystery lover." ~ J.M. LeDuc, Suspense Magazine

"The Mistaken is a first-rate thriller full of hair-raising twists and turns..." ~ Kevin O'Brien, New York Times Bestselling Author of DISTURBED and TERRIFIED

"Thompson gives us a heartbreaking look into a man's mind when his hunger for revenge leads him into a destructive, dangerous chain of events, and follows the nail-biting path to his redemption." ~ AL Jackson, NY Times Bestselling Author of TAKE THIS REGRET and LOST TO YOU

"Thompson is a rare new talent in the thriller genre, combining an intelligent and well-thought-out plot with complex and relatable characters that will give readers the white-knuckle reading experience of their lives! Do not miss this book! I am a fan for life!" ~ Lisa Regan, Award-winning author of FINDING CLAIRE FLETCHER

"A deliciously slow burn that builds to a ferocious crescendo, Nancy S. Thompson's THE MISTAKEN kept me riveted until the very last page." ~Jennifer Hillier, author of CREEP and FREAK

With reviews like these, once you have read The Mistaken, you have to read Nancy's next book called Leverage. In my opinion better if not as good as the first in the sequel. Take a look at the trailer of 'Leverage' to wetten your appetite - Leverage Video

Enjoy it however you choose to read it!

The Mistaken audiobook was nominated for Best Audiobook in eFestival of Words awards. A nomination is a nomination. It's not an award but it could well be so I'll have to just wait and see if 'The Mistaken' wins an online trophy of sorts. You can check out the other nominations here: http://t.co/67AIttcfAx

Subtitles or Voice Over for your Advert?

15/5/2014

It could be said that adverts, the adverts you never forget, are the adverts without sound, with only subtitles or no wording at all. These types of adverts it can be said they give a greater resonance by their use of silence as opposed to sound or visual cues. It could equally be said that the complexity of the viewing and buying public does not necessarily mean that just these types of adverts work, if they actually work at all.

A television audience although a captive audience when the show is on, as soon as the advert break cuts in, people make tea or coffee, do some other rush jobs in between trying to get back before the end of the adverts and before their program starts again. So how does an advertising agency work around this problem? If the supposedly captive viewer does walk away from the TV when the adverts are shown, then the well paid advertising dollars go to waste. The viewer's would possibly only be using the only sense available to them if they have their back turned to the TV or they have just popped into another room for a moment. That sense would be the sense of hearing. Many artistic people prefer subtitles or the use of silence to get across their message, some prefer a famous music track and expect the music along with the stunning use of video artistry to do the job of selling the product. This could and does work if you have the viewers complete attention but as proved by many different research instances, the adverts are the least viewed out of the all the eyes to screen television time. That may seem extraordinarily strange since adverts in some countries seem to be more ever present than the programs themselves.

As an advertising agent or a client who is looking for a perfect video to advertise a product and obviously get as many eyes watching the video to sell their product then a voice over artist should be considered to lay down the backing vocals to a head turning advert. Maybe your advert would be better without a voice over, it would be perhaps more dramatic, more mysterious but if the viewers aren't looking and some viewers never hardly watch adverts (just busy themselves until their show starts again) then you need your advertising prowess to go to the next level. You need to use the sound of a voice to turn their heads to the screen at the relevant time via seductive tones, calm warming tones, friendly guy/girl next door voices, comical tones or whatever other voice brings that work of art advert to their attention.

In games over the past few years there has been a tendency with some game developers to go the route of subtitles rather than voice overs perhaps because of difficult times to cut down on costs. Especially with games, a voice adds volume to the game and is worth it's weight in gold to promote games, take you through the journey of the game itself and add to the effectiveness of the game throughout. This part of the game where they add voices to the game is not always handled by the production house itself and sometimes it's dealt with by special game localisation experts because of the many languages that need to be translated.

Whatever you do with your advert, game or any other project never under-estimate the power of voice over subtitles or silence.

Twitter sentences might be small but a sad day for Turkey to lose Twitter

20/3/2014

Not really much to say "This must be just the beginning of more censorship!" A few sentences on a Twitter tweet is enough to get governments running scared and claiming they are protecting children and unfortunately in Turkey's case ending with a complete ban. Censored and closed to Turkey. Twitter - amazing sentences so small can cause so much fear and ripples in governmental circles. What next Facebook, Four Square, the whole Internet.

New Year, New Voice Jobs 2014

29/12/2013

Don't you just love it when you get awarded a job via your audition and you get that excitement of reading the first few sentences or if it's a shorter piece like an advert that one and only sentence? Can't wait for all the new jobs out there that could be in the mind of a client's or on a video editor's computer right now.

2014 is a new year and I thought 2013 was a great year, not everyone thought this about 2013 maybe because of the number 13 but I do love this number and it has been a fairly good year. Here's hoping 2014 is a great year for me and also for all the fellow VA's out there.

Happy New Year for 2014!

A little about the plot and what a plot it is.

A fast paced and high energy story about guilt, anger and learning how to forgive. At times harrowing and very unpredictable. It will have you on the edge of your seat. With an intricate plot, the twists and turns will get you until the very end. Their are links below to the audiobook.

Get ready for a 2014 rush of jobs in voice over

27/12/2013

Time to make sure your voice is in tip-top shape post Christmas period and because as we go in to 2014, a new year, time for new voice projects, and a number of other pet projects.

There is usually a definite slowdown at Christmas time and as soon as Christmas is over the amount of voice over jobs does not pick up so much because of holiday leave and possibly hangovers and over indulgence (too many parties). Some projects get shelved for a couple of weeks, some just give the client a minor and temporary seasonal bout of Alzheimer. Then as the first few days of January begin the pet projects and the temporary shelved professional voice projects start to get the dust blown off them and get readied for your beautiful voice talent. There is a rapid increase in the amount of work available and the voice artists suddenly begin to feel like their schedules are filling up again. With the workload picking up and everybody starting back refreshed in the new year 2014, all of the same crowd of VA's will be out there looking for jobs as well as yourself, the competition is still high, you still need to hone your skills and you still need to upgrade your equipment if you need to and if you have the budget and work out the formula for staying at the top of your game.

It's important to keep the voice artist to client relationship on a very friendly basis because you don't know who the client who hasn't booked you for a while knows and whoever they know is maybe someone who needs to use you. No-one wants to work with someone who has a chip on their shoulder so always be as nice as pie and contain your thoughts even if a project goes a bit astray because of lack of communication.

"How many of us have been on a project that just seems to go backwards and forwards with communication that doesn't quite communicate fully what the client wants?"

There are always some projects that work out this way but keep your annoyance in check and always play it cool. Many voice projects are easy and the clients you deal with can also be easy going but some jobs just seem to have a complete perfectionist at the other end and nothing ever seems to be right. Bite your tongue, be nice and keep that business relationship well balanced.

With the influx of work and projects that should happen in January 2014 as everyone comes back from their holidays, there should be enough jobs for everyone but you'll still be fishing for jobs by auditioning. New Years Resolution! Let's all learn how to fish better and more efficiently - 2014 is going to be an interesting year!

Nancy S. Thompson started writing fiction rather suddenly one day in 2010.  Inspired by a song, she was struck with an idea she couldn’t shake and just had to write it down.  It was while working on this, her first novel, that she discovered how much she loved writing.  Nancy makes her fiction debut with The Mistaken, and is currently working on its sequel, Leverage. In addition to owning an interior design business, Nancy is also a book editor. A Bay Area, California transplant, Nancy is currently living in Seattle with her husband of 23 years, their son, a student at Seattle University, their giant snow dog, Jack, and his kitty, Skye.
